Nothing has officially announced that Nothing OS 4.0, its next major update built on Android 16, is set to roll out soon for eligible devices. Teased during July’s Nothing Phone (3) launch, the stable build will follow a closed beta phase and introduce an overhauled user interface with circular widgets and toggles.
Redesigned Interface with Circular Elements
An X post from Nothing offered a first glimpse of the revamped UI. The teaser video highlights:
- Circular home-screen icons, including a torch icon that lights up red
- Round Bluetooth and dark mode toggles
- New circular brightness slider and temperature-monitor widget
- Pill-shaped toggle design debut
The video also flashes an umbrella icon and a wheel-shaped graphic, hinting at additional surprises for home-screen widgets.
Phone (1) Support Extended but No OS 4.0
Nothing CEO Carl Pei confirmed that the original Phone (1) will not receive Nothing OS 4.0, having reached the end of its three-year update cycle. Instead, Phone (1) users will get one final year of security patches while the device’s software lifecycle concludes.
Devices Eligible for Nothing OS 4.0
The following handsets remain in line for the Android 16-based upgrade:
- Nothing Phone 2
- Nothing Phone 3
- Nothing Phone 2a
- Nothing Phone 2a Plus
- Nothing Phone 3a
- Nothing Phone 3a Pro
- CMF Phone 1
- CMF Phone 2 Pro
Rollout Timeline
At the Phone (3) unveiling, Nothing pledged a September rollout for Android 16 on qualifying models. With the teaser now live and closed-beta builds already in testing, an open beta is likely imminent ahead of the broader public release.
Looking Ahead
As Nothing OS 4.0 nears a public rollout, users can anticipate deeper customization of the Glyph interface and tighter integration with Nothing’s ecosystem of accessories. Early adopters should watch for an open beta announcement, while Android 16’s core features—improved privacy controls, seamless Health Connect support, and power-efficiency tweaks—will further refine the Nothing experience.
